Amphibia is an American animated series created by Matt Braly. The series premiered on June 14, 2019 on DisneyNOW and YouTube and on June 17, 2019 on Disney Channel.

On May 15, 2019, ahead of the series premiere, Disney Channel renewed the series for a second season, which premiered on July 11, 2020.[1]

On June 23, 2020, the series was renewed for a third season, ahead of the second season premiere.[2] On Reddit, Matt stated that Amphibia would have three acts, which means that the third season will be the final season of the show.[3]

The series ended on May 14, 2022, with the three-part conclusion of "The Beginning of the End", "All In", and "The Hardest Thing".

Premise

Main article: Timeline

Amphibia chronicles the adventures of 13-year-old Anne Boonchuy, who is magically transported to the fantastical world of Amphibia, a rural marshland full of frog-people. There she meets an excitable young frog named Sprig Plantar, his unpredictable sister Polly and overprotective grandpa Hop Pop. With Sprig's help, Anne will transform into a hero and discover the first true friendship of her life.

Production information

Braly conceived the idea for the series as production on Gravity Falls was wrapping up around 2014 and 2015.[4] By early 2015, he was already doing the first concept drawings of the main characters.[5] The series was already in development with its pilot by 2016,[6] while the first season was greenlit for began production in April 2017.[7]

On February 23, 2018, Disney Channel greenlit the series, alongside The Owl House.[8] According to Matt Braly on a tweet, the development for Amphibia had taken "almost two years" before it was picked up in February 2018.[9] On Twitter, many of the production crew announced their involvement in the series.

On March 27, 2019, it was announced that Brenda Song would star in the series as the voice of Anne Boonchuy.[10] In April 2019, Justin Felbinger was announced as the voice of Sprig Plantar. On May 15, 2019, the series was renewed for a second season ahead of its premiere, along with the announcement of Bill Farmer and Amanda Leighton being casting as the voices of Hop Pop Plantar and Polly Plantar respectively.[1]

The series was renewed for a third season on June 23, 2020, ahead of the second season premiere.[2] The season was later confirmed by many crew members as the last for the series. On May 3, 2022, Matt Braly announced on Twitter that the production of the third season and the series overall had ended, with the final episode being delivered to the network.[11]

  • According to Matt Braly, the series was intended to contain many fantasy elements (as shown in the pilot), but those were toned down for the series in response to the success of the Nickelodeon series The Loud House.[42][43][44]
  • Anne, Sprig, Polly and Hop Pop are the only characters officially registered with the United States Copyright Office, with their respective registration numbers being VAu001361181, VAu001361182, VAu00136117 and VAu001361180.
  • Four episodes ("Prison Break", "Toadcatcher", "Barrel's Warhammer" and "The Core & The King") do not feature the main characters (five, if Marcy's hallucination in "Olivia & Yunan" is excluded).
    • Interestingly, these episodes are all the second segments of their respective episodes.
  • Many references have been made to Amphibia in popular culture, many of which are from its sister series The Owl House.
  • After the premiere of the series' finale on May 14, 2022, regular reruns of the series left Disney Channel one week later with a final rerun of "Mother of Olms"/"Grime's Pupil".[45] Although Disney Channel would later only air reruns during special occasions, the series continued to regularly air on Disney XD until it left its programming schedule on July 28, 2023 with a final rerun of "Swamp and Sensibility"/"Wax Museum",[46][47] after which it would seldom air on that channel as well. The series remains available on transactional video on demand services and Disney+.
