Oh, there's your first mistake, love. I never care what other people think of me.
—Wally Ribbiton to Anne, "Wally and Anne"

Walliam "Wally" Ribbiton, better known as One-Eyed Wally, is a supporting character of Amphibia. Described as "a crazy person who lives under bridges" by the townsfolk of Wartwood, he lives a double life among the wealthy townsfolk of Ribbitvale, as he is the son of Wigbert Ribbiton and is only in Wartwood under the pretense of business.

Appearance[]

Body[]

Wally is a turquoise frog with a pale lilac tongue, a dark turquoise bang, long dark turquoise hair, and a small turquoise beard. As his nickname implies, one of his yellow eyes is always closed with blue-violet eyelids.

Clothing[]

His hair is almost always hidden under a flat broad-brimmed dark blue-violet hat with a low top, decorated with a red reed (cattail) sticking out of it with two narrow green leaves; he calls his hat "iconic". Wally wears black denim shorts with an open indigo vest and an old, stitched scarf, one half of which is red and the other orange. The nose of the right boot is torn off, as a result of which the front half of Wally's right foot is exposed. Wally almost always carries a light green concertina (an instrument similar to the accordion), which is designed to resemble a caterpillar.

Personality[]

He is something like a wandering bard singing strange old ballads and songs on his concertina, (which is shaped like that similar to caterpillars), from which one can foretell unexpected and sudden transitions from speech to singing. For example, in the middle of a conversation, he may suddenly begin to sing funny songs to the accompaniment of his concertina. In the episode "Wally and Anne", Hop Pop also mentions that Wally sleeps under bridges.

Initially, Wally reveals that he is biased, calling Anne and Sprig's friendship "disgusting" and "unnatural". However, this is more likely due to the general fear and aversion of the population in which he grew up to "monsters", i.e., to species that differ from them.

Wally tells Anne that he doesn't care what others think about him, thereby showing that he is self-confident and free in spirit. Despite his mostly carefree attitude, Wally struggles to keep up with his family's expectations in "Swamp and Sensibility", and is afraid to be honest with them, particularly towards his father. But after Anne offered to give him some help by joining in as his "beast" in Beast Polo (although it's totally her fault that she previously made a mistake that caused his family to be angry about Wally), Wally gets the courage to admit it and reconciles with his father.

Background[]

Early life[]

Swamp and Sensibility (128)

Wally as a child with his ladybug pet, Fiddleleaf.

Wallium Ribbiton was born in Ribbitvale, the most luxurious and high society town in Amphibia, into the wealthy Ribbiton family, known for their brand of ribbons, being his father Wigbert Ribbiton. Years later, he ended up meeting the town of Wartwood during business travel and there he would begin a double life, being a tramp in Wartwood, and a high society frog in Ribbitvale, but hiding his life as a tramp from his father, and his life as a member of the Ribbiton family from Wartwood.[2]

According to Wally, at some point in his life, someone who died gave him a concertina, hoping that he would avenge his killer by defeating him with music. Wally would then begin to play it.[3]

Meeting with "the beast"[]

AnneorBeast10

Wally encounters with Anne for the first time.

A night after leaving Stumpy's Diner, Wally heads out into the forest, however, he heard a noise and met Anne Boonchuy for the first time, who tried to ask where she was, but Wally got scared thinking she is a beast and then ran off. He then told everyone in Wartwood about Anne and set out to capture and destroy her, however, after saving the crowd of citizens who were after her from being attacked by a red mantis in the forest, they decide to let Anne live, while the Plantars agree to let her stay on their farm.[4] Wally is also appalled to see Anne and Sprig Plantar forming a bond, calling it "disgusting."[5]

Polly's problems[]

Later, Wally is seen drinking with Polly Plantar where he is impressed with her burping. When Anne and Polly get into an argument, Wally watches and is shocked when Anne reveals that she finds Polly disgusting. Later, Wally watches Polly break Wartwood's spitting record in order to repay a debt Anne unintentionally got herself and the Plantars into when paying everyone in town with worthless IOUS.[6]

Stumpy's Diner's remodelation[]

While Anne helps to clean the restaurant, she accidentally hits Wally with a mop, waking him up; he then asks what day it is. After Anne finishes cleaning the restaurant, Stumpy praises her for her hard work and for getting Wally out, only for Wally to run through the kitchen behind them, exclaiming "That's what you think!"[7]

Tax fraud[]

The toad soldiers taking away Wally's belongings.

Wally snatches a bag of beetle jerky before Anne could take from a shelf at Grub & Go. He taunts Anne, calling her a scarecrow, and laughs when she slips on a wet floor. Later, as Wally takes a bath, he is visited by Anne, Bog, Fens, and Mire due to being on a list of individuals who did not pay their taxes to Toad Tower. Despite insisting he always pays his taxes, Wally's belongings get taken by the toads as punishment. However, Wally is given back the bag of beetle jerky back by Anne, who feels sorry for him, despite his earlier mistreatment on her. Once Anne leaves, Wally, touched by Anne's kindness, silently thanks her.

Later, Wally and everyone in Wartwood gather around at the Plantar Farm, witnessing Anne stand up to Bog, Fens, and Mire after having enough of their bullying towards the frogs. Wally and the civilians are amazed by Anne's bravery and selflessness, and they are inspired to stand up to toads and protect Anne from the toads when they severely injure her. After Sprig reveals Mayor Toadstool to have been hoarding the town's taxes, Wally and everyone get their belongings back and cheer for Anne, officially naming her the protector of Anne while finally respecting her.[8]

Alastair team vs. Hunter team[]

Hail Hunter

Wally as part of Hunter's team.

Later, Wally attends a local theater night in Wartwood and watches the movie Love Choice, but when the movie ends on a cliffhanger, he wonders if the character Constance chose either Hunter or Alastair, and Anne comforts him that a sequel is being made. When a war breaks out among the citizens over who between Alastair and Hunter should keep the protagonist Constance, Wally goes in favor of Hunter, going to his team, led by Polly. When Anne and Hop Pop trick both teams into meeting each other, Wally and his teammates engage in a fight with the opposing team. When the Alastair group seemingly retreats, Wally and his teammates follow them, only to get caught in an ambush, leaving both sides to end the war with one another. Sometime later, Wally attends a movie night where he urges Anne to start the movie Dinner with Anders when she tries to explain what it is about.[9]

The hiber day[]

Snow-Day00253

Anne and Sprig playing with Wally and Mrs. Croaker while they are frozen.

When the Hiber Day arrives, Wally and the rest of Wartwood are frozen by the low temperature, but Anne takes care of everyone so that nothing happens to them. However, Anne unfreezes Sprig and they begin to play with the frozen citizens, including Wally and Croaker, with whom they play at being "lovers". Wally and the rest of the people are later unfrozen when Hiber Day is over, and they learn of Anne and Sprig's games thanks to Sprig.[10]

Searching for the Moss Man[]

When the Plantars don't believe Anne that she saw the Moss Man, considering it a myth and thinking that instead, she went crazy like Wally, Anne decides to ask him for help to find the Moss Man as he also claims to have seen him, to which he agrees. Wally and Anne embark on a journey guided by Wally to the apparent place where the Moss Man lives, but during the journey, Anne almost falls into the void along with her phone after her foot slips, but Wally rescues them both. As they prepare to sleep so they can continue their journey in the morning, Anne asks him why he acts the way he does in Wartwood, and he responds by saying that he didn't care what anyone else thought about him.

As they resume their journey they arrive at a meadow, where they meet the Moss Man, being astonished since he had never actually seen it, but Anne gets angry for lying to him, telling him that she only took him there thinking that he had seen the creature and thus proving that she was not like him, making Wally sad, but Anne apologizes when she realizes that she was too hard on him. When they try to take a picture of the Moss Man, Wally has an accident doing so where he is about to fall into the void, making Anne have to decide between saving him or taking the picture of the creature, deciding to save him and let the creature go, no longer caring about not having proof of the creature's existence or the town and the Plantars comparing her to Wally.[3]

Bizarre Bazaar[]

S1E16B-Wally needs a new pair of shoes

Wally later goes to the Bizarre Bazaar, a market that happens once a year where he plays a gambling game. After Wally scores a high roll on his dice, a small creature kicks his dice, causing Wally to lose any money he bet on. This angers Wally who demands a refund, but he is apprehended by the bazaar's guards who tell him there are no refunds at the bazaar as they take him away to punish him. He later appears during a cockroach race between Anne, Sprig, and the Wrecker, exclaiming he has a rash when frogs started betting their money on the Wrecker.[11]

Brainwashed[]

When Apothecary Gary brainwashes the people of Wartwood, Wally is one of Gary's victims as he and the other brainwashed civilians go to attack Hop Pop who was the only one not under Gary's control. Wally is then saved by the Plantars' snail, Bessie after she eats the mind-controlling mushrooms on his head. After Gary's defeat, Wally is freed from his control and returns home, not having any memory of his time while brainwashed.[12]

Anne's party and reunion[]

S1E19B-Validation!

Polly letting Wally into Anne's party.

Wally attends Anne's Frog of the Year party. He gets sad when Polly refuses to have him enter the party, but becomes overjoyed when Polly reveals she was just joking and lets him into the party. However, after a live mudskipper destroys the party by causing a fire, a saddened Anne questions Wally and the townsfolk why they voted her to be Frog of the Year. At this, Hop Pop reassures her that they made her Frog of the Year because they have seen how much she has grown into a better person and are proud of her for it, making Wally support Hop Pop's claim by saying it is why he voted for her as well. After reassuring Anne, Wally and the townsfolk scavenge the remains of the party and continue having fun, honoring Anne as Frog of the Year.[13]

That same night, he also attends the banquet at the South Toad Tower that Captain Grime and Sasha Waybright organize "for the reunion between Anne and Sasha", although it's really a hoax to catch and execute Hop Pop. After Anne arrives to rescue the imprisoned citizens of Wartwood and asks if anyone has an idea to get out of there, Wally suggests planting some bushrooms in his vest around the tower to make it explode, but Anne rejects the idea because of how dangerous it could be. Despite Anne's refusal, Wally ends up planting the mushrooms in some sewers under the tower, which later saves all. Wally along with the rest of Wartwood manage to escape from the Toad Tower and return to the town.[14]

Revealing his double life[]

Swamp and Sensibility (52)

Anne and the Plantars encounter with Wally in Wigbert.

During Anne and the Plantars' trip to Newtopia, they make a stop in Ribbitvale, where they find to their surprise a much more refined and elegant Wally. There they discover that Wally is the son of Wigbert Ribbiton and that he has had a double life all the time. Anne encourages Wally to reveal his true self to his family, but he refuses for fear that his family will estrange him and also separate him from his beloved ladybug pet, Fiddleleaf.

Swamp and Sensibility (269)

Seeing Wally's sadness at having to hide his true self but also at being separated from his family, Anne decides to show her family a video of Wally's tramp life in Wartwood so that they would realize how happy he is being that, but instead gets a horrified Wigbert who forbids Wally to return to Wartwood. After this, Wally challenges his father to a Beast Polo. Wally with the help of Anne as his mount beats Wigbert in the challenge.

Wigbert accepts the defeat and the fact that Wally will leave Ribbitvale, but Wally tells him that he doesn't want to leave Ribbitvale nor stop being a Ribbiton and only wishes he could be who he is without hiding it from him. Wigbert ends up accepting Wally's true self. Wigbert also reveals to Wally that he too hides a secret, that he loves to play music with the jug. Pulling out his accordion, Wally and Wigbert perform in celebration as Anne and the Plantars join in, until a giant peacock appears and roars at them.[2]

Homecomings and the Battle of the bands[]

Battle of the Bands-00545

Wally in Anne's group photo.

When Anne and the Plantars return from Wartwood, Wally greets them while denying his encounter with them, resulting in Polly calling him by his real name and forcing him to scuttle off. Later as a battle of the bands is held in Wartwood after spinning the Wheel of Fun, Wally alongside Leopold Loggle, Hop Pop, and Sprig perform as a band, receiving a 6 from Toadstool and a 5.5 from Albus Duckweed. He poses shortly thereafter in Wartwood's farewell photo of Anne, Sasha, and Marcy, as they will be sent home by King Andrias the next day.[15]

War at Amphibia and joining the resistance[]

True Colors-00962

Wally watching the frobots going to Newtopia.

When King Andrias shows his true dark nature and begins to create many frobots for an army, Wally, Toadstool, Toadie, Mrs. Croaker, Ivy, Rosemary, Lavender, and Ginger witness the frobots going to Newtopia Castle.[16]

Turning Point00161

Wally visiting Sasha.

After the King mortally wounds Marcy and Anne and the Plantars escape to Earth through the Calamity Box, Sasha and Grime escape to Wartwood, where they tell everyone what happened, though telling them that Anne sent them to protect them and skipping over the fact that an army of frobots is going to destroy Wartwood for killing them both. Wally goes the next day just to give Sasha his support; he tells her that any friend of Anne's is also her friend, and also tells her some lessons that Anne taught him, such as the importance of honesty, being yourself, and the value of friendship, even writing a song about it, ending up causing Sasha start to feel bad about not telling them the truth.

Turning Point00351

Wally fighting dwarf frobots.

Later, Sasha decides to do so and summons everyone, telling them that in reality Anne and the Plantars were teleported unwillingly, when suddenly the frobots arrive and start attacking them; however, everyone in the town, including Wally, start defending both of them from being killed and manage to defeat the frobots. Everyone forgives Sasha and cheers her on.[17] Shortly later, he joins the newly formed Wartwood Resistance, becoming one of its best members.[18][19] Wally also begins composing military jingles and pep really chants.[20]

Anne and the Plantars' return[]

Amphibia s3- Anne is shocked at the new Loggle

Anne meets with Croaker, Wally, and Leopold.

When Anne and the Plantars make it back to Amphibia, they encounter a wild insect under the control of a mind-control collar, and are saved by Wally, Croaker, and a muscular Loggle, much to their surprise. They join the resistance and Sasha makes Anne the commander, as a way to avoid making the same mistakes she made with Anne before, even though Anne doesn't know much about leading. As her first task, she must lead them to the factory where the necklaces are made in order to destroy it; Anne is accompanied by Sasha, the Plantar, Wally, Croaker, and Leopold. However, after a series of events in which the group is nearly killed by a controlled snake, Sasha returns as the commander and they manage to escape from the snake and successfully destroy the factory.[18]

Fighting the Marauders[]

Wartwood Resistance ready for a mission S3E12A

Wally and the team ready to fight the Marauders.

Shortly later, the The Marauders steal a load of weapons from the resistance. Sasha then assigns a team of rebels led by Croaker and consisting of Wally, Leopold, Maddie, and Toadie, to fight the group while she and Anne go to retrieve the weapons. Croaker assigns Leopold and Maddie to go with her, while Wally and Toadie are on the offensive, however, Toadie prefers to stand guard as on previous occasions. The team arrives at the base, however, they fall into a trap set by the Marauders to catch them, and although Sasha and Anne manage to escape, Croaker's group does not, but Sasha has faith that they will manage to escape. Trapped, they discover that the leader of the Marauders is Barry the candyman, who is working for Andrias and plans to sell the group to him at a high price. Croaker devises a plan to escape, and although they narrowly succeed, one of the soldiers, Brian, throws Toadie at Croaker, knocking her out, and although they try to wake her up they don't succeed. Toadie, after being bothered by Brian, brings out a more wild side and leads the group to escape, fighting against the Marauders to do so. The group manages to defeat the Marauders and destroy their base, returning later to the resistance base.[19]

Caring kill-a-pillars[]

Fight or flight Screenshots (64)

Domino 2's offspring around Wally

When Anne's old pet in Amphibia, Domino 2, is caught by one of Andrias's drones, Anne asks the resistance, including to Wally, of taking care of Domino 2's offspring. When Wally is assigned to keep an eye on them, he ends up giving in to the kill-a-pillars' tenderness and even names one of them Wally Jr., which endears the rest of the resistance to them as well.[21]

Fighting the king[]

When the Resistance finally goes to fight Andrias and his army, Wally takes part in the battle. However, when the Core captures Sasha, Anne, Grime, and the Plantars, it declares the Resistance had lost and proceeds to go to Earth to initiate a planned invasion of the place.[22] Despite this, Wally and the rest of the Resistance continue fighting the Frobot army in Amphibia. Meanwhile, on Earth, Anne and Sasha manage to defeat Andrias and the Core, freeing Marcy from Core's control and declaring victory for the resistance.[23] After finally defeating the Core and preventing the moon from crashing into Amphibia, the girls bid farewell forever to everyone there and return to their home on Earth.[24]

After the war[]

Nine months later,[25] Wally resumed his normal life. Wally attends the ceremony to unveil the statue of Anne that Wartwood made in her honor, and while on his way to the ceremony, he stumbles upon a Polly now grown into a full frog.[24]

Relationships[]

Wigbert Ribbiton[]

Wally has great respect for his father, so much so that he feared he would discover his double life as a tramp in Wartwood, which is why he hid it all the time. When Wigbert finally discovers Wally's secret thanks to Anne, he refuses to accept it and forbids him to return to Wartwood, but Wally challenges him to a Beast Polo so that if he wins, he will let him return to Wartwood. When he manages to beat him, Wigbert agrees to let Wally leave, but Wally explains that he doesn't want to be separated from him and that he only wants to continue his life in Wartwood, and Wigbert accepts it.

Anne Boonchuy[]

Wally was the first Amphibian to see Anne; he mistook her for a monster and rallied the citizens of Wartwood to go after her. After the misunderstanding was cleared up, he still had a hard time accepting her. Both Wally and Anne initially felt a mutual dislike for each other, with Anne finding him annoying and unpleasant to be around, and Wally finding her to be a dangerous and horrible being. Wally also found Anne and Sprig's friendship "disgusting" and "unnatural." However, he later appreciates her after she protects him and the rest of the citizens from the Toad Tax Collectors in "Toad Tax".

In "Wally and Anne", Wally did not laugh at Anne when she announced that she had met the Moss Man in the forest. He substantiated his reaction by the fact that he allegedly ran into him once. Later it turns out that he invented it, and in fact, like everyone else, he did not particularly believe in the reality of the Moss Man but went to look for him with Anne for the sake of thirst for adventure and fun. After he saves Anne's life and smartphone, her prejudiced, wary and squeamish attitude towards him gives way to a friendly disposition. Anne began to see that he was a person deep inside with feelings and soon begin to find his happy-go-lucky attitude inspiring as it meant not caring about what others think. Anne believes that this is a cool character trait, but still inadvertently offends him when she says that she does not want everyone to think that she looks like him. Wally sadly asks: "What's wrong with being like me?" and resentfully leaves. But Anne catches up with him, apologizes and says she is glad that they went on this campaign together. At the end of the episode, she calls him her good friend, realizing that during the time spent together, she learned from him not to take too seriously the opinions of others. Therefore, when in the end the villagers call them both crazy, Wally comments on this with the phrase: "Wow. Tough crowd," to which Anne optimistically and with a smile replies: You can't please everyone. After that, Wally devotes a song to her, in which she calls her "fair Anne" and sings that she lost to a crazy heart.

In "Swamp and Sensibility", Anne learned that Wally actually comes from a wealthy family and saw how his double life was making him miserable. She helped him by making his father see who he really is and accepting him, which Wally is really grateful to her for. In "The Shut-In!", Anne is shown to have an alarm set on her phone to remind her of Wally's birthday.

Powers and abilities[]

  • Concertina: Wally has a great skill for playing the concertina, playing music with it while singing ditties and odes. In "Wally and Anne", he tells Anne that someone who died gave it to him and he hoped Wally would avenge his murderer by defeating him with his music.
  • Beast Polo: Like his father, Wally is an exceptional player at Beast Polo. Although he usually plays it with his pet ladybug Fiddleleaf, he was able to play the game using Anne as a substitute.

Trivia[]

  • In "Breakout Star", his hair appears to be short instead of his casual long hair.
  • In "The Shut-In!", Wally's birthday takes place during the day of the Shut-In.
  • Wally was the first character to speak in the series, as he delivered the first line in "Anne or Beast?".
  • In "Wally and Anne", Wally's real name is stated to be "Wallace", contradicting the rest of the series where his real name is said to be Walliam.
  • The instrument Wally plays is always incorrectly referred to as an accordion. It's actually a concertina, a smaller squeezebox that only comes in buttons. An accordion, by contrast, is a bigger squeezebox and sometimes comes in button or keyboard form.
