Slow to accept, and even slower to respect.
—Wartwood's official motto

Wartwood Swamp, also known as just Wartwood, is one of the main yet small towns in the Frog Valley of Amphibia, being populated predominantly by frogs and toads with few newts and an axolotl. The town serves as one of the main locations of the series, playing a predominant role during the 1st season and second halves of the next 2 Seasons.

Geography[]

It consists of various buildings such as a supermarket, a restaurant, a tea shop, a salon, police station, and many houses. Most buildings are carved from the stumps of trees or made from toadstool mushrooms. Light is provided by bio-luminescent mushrooms and fireflies occasionally during special annual events such as the Firefly Formal or the Frog of the Year event.

Society and culture[]

In Wartwood, the inhabitants are kind and friendly to each other, thus having a peaceful coexistence among themselves under most circumstances. However, when it comes to something and someone new, they tend to be overly skeptical, hostile and intolerant, taking a while to become accepting; their lack of acceptance and respect towards something new even became their main motto, "Slow to accept, and even slower to respect."[1] Even in some cases, the villagers tend to be mocking and humiliating towards the new and strange, as they were in the beginning with Anne and later Marcy and Frobo.

The town's economy was relatively poor before Anne arrived to the town.[2] Nonetheless there are also celebrations and parties for specific dates, such as the mayoral election,[3] the Grubhog Day,[4] the Bugball game,[5] or the Frog of the Year annual party.[6]

History[]

Wartwood Swamp was founded around 1,000 years ago, with Leif (later known as Lily Plantar) being one of its founder members.[7]

In 2019, after being teleported to Amphibia, human girl Anne lands in Wartwood, hiding for a while in the woods, but later, she meets the Plantar family and stays to live with them on their farm.[8]

Marcy Wu stated the town is built on top of a swamp and only stays afloat because the founders knew exactly how much weight to build everything.[9]

After King Andrias starts a war in all Amphibia to prepare the invasion of Earth, Sasha Waybright and Captain Grime with the locals in Wartwood became the first resistance group, the Wartwood Resistance, in Amphibia to oppose against King Andrias and his Frobot military force.[10] By the time Anne and the Plantars have returned to Amphibia, the main town has been destroyed, and the residents with resistance fighters have relocated to an underground base.[11]

Around nine months later,[12] it was rebuilt, with a statue of Anne being placed in the center captioned with the phrase "We miss you, girl!". The town's new mayor after the 2020 Wartwood's mayor election is Toadie, the successor of Toadstool.[13]

Trivia[]

  • The name of the area is a pun on the word, "Wart," which is a type of growth often associated with toads.
  • Many places in Amphibia don't have access to electricity, so Wartwood must rely on touch-sensitive bioluminescent mushrooms for lighting as it's obvious the town's economy was relatively poor before Anne came. It's possible electricity was brought to the town sometime after the events of the series.
  • The town of Wartwood originally has a population of 88 mixed Amphibians, in a possible reference to the birthdate of Matt Braly, 1988.
    • During Season 2, with Hop Pop, Sprig and Polly going to Newtopia with Anne, the town had 85 Amphibians living inside. When Anne, Sasha and Marcy are about to get back home with the Plantars right to Newtopia, it's 85 again. Though this changed again to 86 when Grime and Sasha escaped from Newtopia Castle as both had to find shelter in Wartwood in "Turing Point". Once Anne & the Plantars got back to Wartwood in "Commander Anne", there are more than 88 Amphibians in Wartwood albeit relocated at the Underground Resistance Base due to Wartwood destroyed by Andrias' military force.
  • According to "Hop-Popular", the rest of the Valley can also vote in the Wartwood local election.
  • It is a 2 week journey from Wartwood to Newtopia, but a month journey by taking the road around the mountains.
  • Hop Pop's friend Sal used to live in Wartwood, until he decided to move to Newtopia to make money in his sandwich shop with his special sauce. However, he changed to promote his sauce, which led to him becoming the founder and owner of his factory, Sauce, Inc..
  • In "Amphibiland", Wartwood Swamp was originally called Lilypaddington.
    • Concept art showed it was originally going to resemble a real-world town, rather than the farm-like place seen in the show.
    • Also, the residents of Wartwood were going to swim instead of walking to other places.
  • In Reddit, Matt stated that Wartwood Swamp is over 1,000 years old.[14] This is officially confirmed in "All In", as Leif founded Wartwood and made the Plantar Farm after hiding the Calamity Box on Earth.
  • In the episode "The Shut-In!", a friend of Hop Pop's named Gabe lives in Wartwood, which Hop Pop tells Sprig he hasn't seen him in a while, and asks if one of the skins on the Seamstress's suit looked like him.
